UNLOCKING MYSORE

Mysore-style self practice is one of the best methods of learning yoga. It is suitable for all levels, especially beginners, for whom the pace is based on the capacity of each student to digest the practice. It is likewise suited to advanced practitioners who can fly at their own pace and get assistance for the postures they really need help with. And it is also a great method for yoga therapy, modifications and adaptations are frequently given to students who need to work towards better physical alignment or to strengthen an injured muscle.

New students will start with learning the foundational postures and will grow their practice with each session. Older students will have a chance to feel the nuances of their challenging postures. Ashtanga yoga traditionally taught is about learning the language of the body, how it connects with breath and mind; we can use it to best embody who we are in the spaces and communities we live in.

MEET KAZ

There is so much grounding and growing that can happen in a yoga practice. It requires time and dedication, but it’s evolution can be greatly catapulted by an inspiring teacher, one who lives the practice, and one who takes āsana (posture) challenges and transform them into potent life lessons. Kaz Castillo is one such teacher. Authorized level 2 by the late Ashtanga master Sharath Jois, Kaz’s story is rich tapestry of dedicated study in India, of teaching in various yoga programs around the world (Unites States., Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East), starting her own ashtanga yoga program in Egypt (since 2017), and of living a life aligned to core yoga values. Yoga Manila is happy to welcome Kaz back, she returns to the Philippines after a successful teaching stint at Boom Festival in Portugal. She brings with her a rich experience of working with many bodies and different ailments. As a teacher, she is as flexible as the yoga she practices. And as a person, clarity of intention and speech, openness of heart, Kaz is able to hold a yoga space that feels safe and soft and full of potential.
